SOUTHGLADE HORNETS
1976 - 1995
Nottingham's Southglade Hornets were formed in 1974 by Alec Williams, a former player with the Nottingham Lions, and they went on to dominate the Nottingham and Midlands leagues for many years. They are past winners of the prestigious (regional) Bert Imms Trophy (twice) and the Orford Trophy (twice).
The Hornets won the BBF Knockout Cup in 1986 defeating local rivals Nottingham Pirates in a thrilling final. They were also beaten finalists in 1987, losing to Hull Mets, and in 1988 and 1990, losing to Enfield Spartans on both occasions.
In 1987 the Hornets also reached their only National championship final, losing to the Cobham Yankees 6-0 at the Oval cricket ground.
The Hornets have figured in two European Cup competitions. The first in 1988 in Belgium when they had a record of 3 wins and 3 losses to finish 4th. This was the first time in over ten years that a club side from Britain had figured in a European competition. They also took part in the 1992 European Cup in San Marino, also finishing with a record of 3-3.
Sadly the Hornets are no longer in existence but have a proud playing record and have produced many players to the GB squad at both senior and junior levels.
By Michael Harrold, former manager.
NOTE: The Hornets' final season was 1995, but the following year a team called "Nottingham Steelers" played in the National League North. I'm not sure if this was the Hornets' new name or if it was a new club.
